Play tennis. Hit the farmer’s market on Wednesday. Relax in the hammock with a good book in my hands. These are the main things on my summer bucket list.

Ride their bikes. Fly a kite. Play with friends from morning till dusk. Play soccer and water games. There and many more are on my boys’ summer bucket list.

My kids and I may have different ideas on how to make the most of summer, and their list may include more high energy activities than mine but in the end we’ll certainly reach common ground and manage to happily alternate play with downtime works. Crafting, painting, drawing and reading will be my allies during play breaks.

Summer twig craft for kids

This summer twig craft I’m about to present to you is a great way of spending quality time with kids and helping them express their creativity in a fun way. It starts with a nature walk for gathering the first element : twigs.

Start your summer craft with a nature walk and gather a few twigs

The second item you’ll need for this craft is cardboard. I’m a big fan of repurposing cardboard into toys for kids and try to give it a second life before tossing it into the recycling bin. For this art any small box will do the job as we’ll only use it for a few tiny cutouts: sun, kite, bike and swing.

Recycle cardboard into a summer craft for kids

Glue the twigs together into a frame. Paint the sun and the kite. Create a kid out of paper and make the swing. The swing only requires a small piece of cardboard cut out as a rectangular and twine. Punch two small holes on each side of the cardboard piece and thread the twine through.

Glue all the elements to the twig frame. I also added a few yellow and blue flowers made out of card stock.

A nature craft and a big bowl of ice cream is the recipe for a perfect summer family day.

Once the kids are done playing with the art  (They will want to give the kid on the swing a push and then another and another.) you can all take a break and relax in front of a nice big bowl of ice cream. You deserve it. After all what would summer be without ice cream? And what ice cream would be without toppings? I’m telling you ice cream and toppings are better together!

Take Blue Bunny® Homemade Vanilla, for instance. We paired it with Smucker’s Sundae Syrup Caramel Flavored Syrup and Smucker’s Magic Shell Chocolate Fudge Flavored Topping. We couldn’t have enough. The kids asked for more so we each had a second bowl of ice cream.

Next time you go to Walmart, make sure to visit the ice cream aisle for the Blue Bunny ice cream and the quick snack aisle for the Smucker’s toppings. Plenty of choices to choose from. Did you know that you can earn cash back on Smucker’s Ice Cream Toppings with the free Ibotta app?
