Have you ever thought of a tree as a birthday gift for your child? It is on my list for my youngest when he’s a bit older and can actually help planting one and taking care of it. It’s gotta be a spring gift as you can’t definitely offer a tree in the middle of winter. My son is born in May, which works out perfect.
Kids love trees: climbing them, hiding behind them when playing hide and seek, picking apples if it’s an apple tree, piling their fallen leaves in the fall, playing with sticks, watching birds and squirrels seeking shelter among branches, swinging on tires hung in trees….they can have so much fun with trees so why not make them a tree gift?
You can either look for a tree at a nursery close to your place or you can use one of the many online services that will help you determine what trees are best for your zone and offer detailed information for each type of tree they offer. If you shop at Seeds of Life , for instance, your tree will be shipped in a customized gift box and the container comes wrapped with an elegantly hand tied bow in a natural burlap cover. The birthday gift tree will be accompanied by a handwritten card, detailed care and planting instructions.
If the tree is a young child I would suggest also getting the book “A Tree is Nice” by Janice May Udry. It explores the benefits of having trees around us and while some reasons are funny, others are indisputable facts. It’s an easy to read book with beautiful illustrations that teaches kids how to respect earth and contribute by planting a tree. The last few pages describe how to plant a tree on your own and the pride you feel in watching it grow and be able to say “I planted that tree”.
Here is an extract:
“A tree is nice to plant. You dig the biggest hole you can and put the little tree in. Then you pour in lots of water and then the dirt. You hang the shovel back in the garage.
Every day for years and YEARS you watch the little tree grow. You say to people I planted that tree.”
Happy tree planting!
