Flag Rocks

Sharing is caring!

If you’re looking for activities to get you in the spirit for the Olympic and you enjoy crafting with natural elements, you’ll love these flag rocks that manage to beautifully combine the two.

The Summer or Winter Olympics is the perfect opportunity to teach kids about the flags of the participating countries and help them identify some of them.

It’s a simple craft though it depends on the flags you decide to paint. Some of them are pretty complex to replicate on little rocks. Others are easier.

I made these flag rocks for the Summer Olympics in 2016. They were hosted in Brazil, marking the first time that any country in South America has ever hosted the games.

I  painted the flags of Brazil (host country), Romania (my native country), Belgium (I lived there before moving to the US) and a few countries we visited throughout the years, like Mexico and Switzerland.

I left the flag with the most details to the end and that was the US flag.

Once the Rio Olympics is done you can toss the Olympic flag rock but keep the rest. You can use them in all sorts of  games.

Pair them with a world map and show kids where they can find the countries corresponding to the painted flag rocks.

You can also print out the same flags on card stock cards with the country names written underneath and play a matching game.
