House Day and Night Craft

Sharing is caring!

The other day I watched with the boys a video about what causes day and night and then I helped them create a house and tree template for a house day and night craft. It was exciting as I showed them some tricks in Abode Illustrator and they could choose their own colors for the day house. One made his house blue and the other one yellow.

If you plan on teaching your kids or students about day and night, our craft is an easy and fun idea to go along with your day and night science unit.

House day and night craft - day

The house day and night craft comes with a template. All you have to do is print it and let kids cut out the tree, house, sun, moon and cloud patterns.

House day and night craft - night

This is our second day and night craft. Our first craft is an interactive paper plate day and night craft. It includes a sleeping moon and a smiley sun. I wanted to include some extra elements with this new idea. An opportunity to talk about why things look dark at night.

House day and night craft for kids

I have updated the template to save ink when printing. The template now includes two options:

  • print colored patterns on white paper
  • print black and white patterns on colored paper

Step by step instructions

Start by printing the house day and night template and cut out the patterns.

Fold a dark blue cardstock paper in half and cut.

Add a few water drops to your white paint and dip the paint brush into the paint. Add the stars by placing the paint brush over one half of the dark blue paper and tapping gently on the paint brush. Set it aside to dry.

Glue the black tree onto the dark blue paper, about 1 inch above the bottom line.

Glue the black house next to the tree.

Glue the moon above the tree.

Cut a rectangle from gray paper to fit at the bottom of the dark blue paper. Cut the top using decorative edge scissors.(optional)

Glue the gray rectangle at the bottom of the dark blue paper.

Glue the dark blue paper on one side of the light blue paper.

Glue the green tree onto the light blue paper.

Glue the red house next to the tree, following the same pattern as the black tree and house.

Add the sun above the tree.

Glue the cloud next to the sun.

Cut a rectangle from green paper to fit at the bottom of the light blue paper. Cut the top using decorative edge scissors.(optional)

Glue the green rectangle at the bottom of the light blue paper.
