We love paper plate crafts and have used paper plates before for Earth Day projects. Today we’re combing them with yarn to add a heart element to our craft. This paper plate Earth heart craft can be a fun first sewing project for a preschooler or kindergartner. It only requires a few supplies and it’s easy to make.
When painting the paper plate, you can try to replicate the continents or you can keep it real simple and just add a few green shapes here and there. We left the middle of the paper plate blue, to make room for the heart.
Questions about the paper plate Earth heart craft
My child is too young to handle a sewing project. Can you suggest an alternative to the yarn heart?
You can cut out a heart from paper and glue it in the middle of the paper plate. For a 3D effect, cut out three or four hearts (same size), fold them in half, glue them together and then add them to the paper plate.
Can we color the paper plate instead of painting it?
Of course. Feel free to use crayons or markers.
Can you suggest more paper plate Earth crafts?
As mentioned before, we have used paper plates to make several Earth crafts: paper plate and yarn Earth, paper plate Earth sewing craft, paper plate and button Earth craft.

How to make a paper plate Earth heart craft
Start by painting the continents on the paper plate. Try to replicate their actual shapes or keep it real simple, like we did.
Paint the rest of the paper plate blue.
Set the paper plate aside and let it dry completely.
Draw a heart in the middle of the paper plate and cut it out.
Use a hole punch to make holes along the heart.
Cut a strand of green yarn, thread it through the plastic yarn needle and tie one end to the needle. Tape the other end of the yarn at the back of the paper plate. You can now start threading the yarn through the holes in the paper plate. You can go through the holes one or several times. Keep on threading until you reach the end of your yarn. Secure the end of the yarn to the back of the paper plate with tape.
