Let’s welcome spring with this adorable paper plate rainbow craft.
Last time we saw a rainbow my kids were very determined to find the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.
It was drizzling outside, but we put on our rain boots, grabbed our umbrellas and off we went. I will never say no to a walk outside, even in the rain.
We followed the rainbow quite a bit before we decided to call it a quit and go back home.
Our paper plate rainbow is a great craft for preschoolers and kindergartners who will get to practice their fine motor skills. They will do some cutting and yarn threading as well as painting.
If you’re doing this craft with toddlers, I recommend to do the yarn cutting beforehand and have the kids glue it to the paper plate.
The craft comes with a free cloud template that you can find at the end of the post.
Questions about the paper plate rainbow craft
How not to mix the different colors while painting the rainbow?
If you think you child would get frustrated if they would mix up the rainbow colors (my oldest used to get frustrated when little) you can start with the outside color (red), skip to yellow and then green.
While you wait for these three colors to dry, you can cut out the clouds.
Paint orange and purple after the other three colors have dried out completely.
An alternative would be to use markers or crayons instead of paint.

How to make a paper plate rainbow craft
Start by cutting off the bottom of a paper plate. Then cut out a small semi-circle from the middle of the paper plate.
Paint your rainbow on the paper plate. If you don’t want to mix up the colors, start by painting first red, yellow and green and set the plate aside to dry.
TIP: You can cut out the clouds in the meantime.
After the first three colors have dried out completely, you can paint orange and purple.
If mixing up the colors won’t bother your child, you can paint them in order, starting with red and going towards green or the other way around.
Download the cloud template (find it at the end of the article) and cut out the two clouds.
Use a hole punch to make holes along the paper plate’s edge, on both sides. One hole per color.
Cut two strands of yarn for each color. Fold the yarn in half and thread the fold through a hole in the paper plate to make a loop. Thread the other end of the yarn through the loop and pull it tight to secure it to the paper plate.
You can also use a plastic yarn needle to thread the yarn through the hole and then secure the yarn with a knot.
Glue the clouds at the bottom of the paper plate, one on each side.
