Let’s add a new turkey to our Thanksgiving craft collection today, shall we? It’s going to be a pilgrim turkey craft with a nice big tail and the black hat on his head. We love a good turkey craft idea and this one is easy and cute.
My kids and I have created quite a few turkey crafts over the years. This new turkey brings something new. That black hat can be a great conversation starter about the history and origins of Thanksgiving Day. Learn about the Thanksgiving symbols and meaning. Talk about the Native American heritage and their vibrant cultural traditions. Who were the pilgrims? Why did they come to America?
A Thanksgiving craft can be more than a craft, it can turn into a history lesson.
Once you are done making the pilgrim turkey craft you may want to help your child make a Thanksgiving hat. Also check out our collection of easy crafts for kids for more ideas for the upcoming holidays.
Pilgrim turkey craft
Supplies:
- Pilgrim turkey template
- Construction paper: brown, orange, purple, red, yellow, black, white
- Googly eyes
- Scissors
- Glue
I love crafting with sturdy cardstock paper but construction paper is easier for kids. My boys prefer it. I would still cut out the turkey’s tail from orange cardstock paper and the rest from construction paper.
How to make a pilgrim turkey craft
The pilgrim turkey template comes with two versions:
1. Option 1 – print the template, cut out the patterns and trace them on appropriate colored paper
2. Option 2 – print the pattern directly on colored paper and cut them out.
This way you can easily craft with just one or two kids as well as with a classroom full of students.
Step by step instructions
To make the turkey you will need 1 brown turkey body, 1 yellow beak, 1 red snood, 1 orange tail, 4 purple circles, 1 black hat, 1 white band and 1 yellow buckle.
Start by gluing the circles on the orange tail, two circles on each side of the tail.
Glue the turkey body in the middle of the tail.
Add the snood and beak.
Make the pilgrim hat by gluing the band on top of the hat and the buckle on top of the band.
Glue the hat on top of the turkey’s head.
Add the googly eyes on top of the beak.
