Looking for 4th of July crafts for kids? We have created several American flags so far, from t-shirts to stick flags. Today it’s time to switch to a popular symbol of the United States. We’re going to make an Uncle Sam craft.

Who is Uncle Sam?
- Uncle Sam is a symbol of the United States, together with the bald eagle, the Statue of Liberty and the Liberty Bell
- Uncle Sam is a personification of the government of the United States of America
- During World War I, Uncle Sam was used in military recruiting posters with the words “I Want You For The U.S. Army”
- Uncle Sam is supposedly based on Samuel Wilson, a meat packer from Troy, New York, who supplied rations for the soldiers during the War of 1812

Uncle Sam’s image with the white beard and stars-and-stripes suit was created by a political cartoonist called Nast. He is also credited with the creation of Santa Claus’s image.
This last detail made me smile. When I was working on the Uncle Sam’s template, my oldest saw the beard and mustache. He asked me if it was Santa. I suppose if you replace the red and white striped hat with a red hat with a white pom pom, you can easily turn Uncle Sam into Santa.

Our Uncle Sam craft comes with a template that you can use at home or at school. The classroom template version is designed to be printed directly on colored paper, while the patterns on the home template version are to be traced on colored paper.
The craft is great for preschoolers, kindergartners and older kids. They have to cut and glue all the pieces together. The main craft supply is paper but you will also need googly eyes and a small pom pom for the nose.

We love simple crafts (check out our collection of easy crafts for kids) and our Uncle Sam in no exception.
