Ice bowls - winter activity for kids

Inspired by these gorgeous soup bowls, I made a few colorful ice bowls for my kids. I had them ready in time for this weekend as warmer weather was in the forecast. I was hoping to be able to play with them. But then Saturday came and my boys (2 kids and 1 husband) started to come down one by one with a stomach bug. Needless to say we spent the entire weekend inside.

I only took the ice bowls out of the freezer to take some photos. They look so pretty in the snow! I was very much tempted to play with them by myself.

These ice bowls would make a great addition to a snow kitchen. A few spoons, a ladle, these bowls, a couple of icicles and tons of snow will provide a lot of winter fun to little kids.

Supplies:

  • 2 bowls of different sizes
  • food coloring
  • water
  • beans
  • small fir branch

Step 1: Fill the larger bowl about halfway with water. Add a few drops of food coloring in the water and mix it well.

Step 2: Place the small bowl inside the big bowl and add beans or any other item(s) to hold it down.

Step 3: Cut a fir branch into small pieces. Place the pieces in the water between the two bowls. You can skip this step but the fir placed all around the small bowl helps it stay centered. Add a little more water, if necessary.

Step 4: Place the bowls in the freezer for about 4 hours.

Step 5: Remove the beans from the small bowl and run a bit of warm water inside. Once the ice has loosen, remove the small bowl and run warm water over the outside of the big bowl.

Step 6: Take the colorful ice bowls outside right away or place them back into the freezer until play time.
