This paper plate and yarn baby Moses craft is not only an interactive way to teach kids about the story of baby Moses but also a creative project to help young kids work on their fine motor skills.
If you’re teaching about the Moses story at home or in Sunday school, this is a perfect craft to keep your children engaged. All you need are simple supplies you likely already have in your home–yarn, a hole puncher, paint, scissors, and glue. This paper plate and yarn baby Moses craft is great for helping kids practice their fine motor skills.
If you’re low on time, you can prep the plate by painting it yourself and using a hole puncher on the bottom half of the plate. Otherwise, you’ll start the craft with the children painting.
As they color the plate blue, talk about the world baby Moses was born into. He was the child of a Jewish woman who lived in Egypt. At the time, Jewish people worked for the Egyptians, but they weren’t treated nicely at all.
One day, the Egyptian leader, Pharaoh, wanted to take many of the Jewish babies from their mothers. Moses’ mother didn’t want him to be hurt, so she placed him in a basket and sent him down the Nile River.
As the plate dries, have the children start to cut out baby Moses and the reeds.
If you have a group sharing supplies, consider having other children start to punch holes in the second half of their plates. Once everyone has their holes punched out and images cut out, glue on the colored reeds.
The final step is to thread the yarn through the holes, going across and back again. This is an excellent step to teach fine motor skills.
While this is going on, talk about how it was dangerous for Moses to travel down the river because there were crocodiles, snakes, and big fish in there! But God protected Moses. He kept him safe, just like this little net holds baby Moses in place. Moses was rescued from the Nile River by Pharoah’s daughter! And he grew up to be an amazing leader.

How to make the paper plate and yarn baby Moses craft
Start by painting half of a paper plate light blue and the other half dark blue. Set the plate aside to dry out completely.
Use a hole punch to make holes along the bottom half of the paper plate.
Cut a strand of yarn, thread it through the plastic yarn needle and tie one end to the needle. Tape the other end of the yarn at the back of the paper plate. You can now start threading the yarn through the holes in the paper plate.
You can go through the holes one or several times. Keep on threading until you reach the end of your yarn. Secure the end of the yarn to the back of the paper plate with tape.
Glue the reed flower at the top of the stem.
Glue the two leaves, one on each side of the stem.
Glue all three reed plants onto the top half of the paper plate, right above the yarn.
Glue the body and blanket together, making sure the arms are on top of the blanket.
Glue the body and blanket onto the basket.
Glue the head onto the body.
Place the basket in the water.
