A beautiful and easy yarn beard paper plate gnome craft for kids to make this Christmas.
Christmas gnomes started making their way into the holidays a few years ago and now you see them popping up everywhere. They used to be lawn decorations but they gradually took over the houses. And I can see why – they are adorable with their long beards, large noses and colorful hats.
DIY Christmas gnomes are popular because people like to make their own ornaments. We make ornaments with kids for our own homes or to gift to other family members.
The paper plate gnome craft I’m sharing today can be easily turned into a holiday decoration to hang over the fireplace. I added a free gnome craft template for your convenience.
Yarn and paper plate crafts
We love combining yarn and paper plates to create easy crafts for kids. My boys used a plastic needle for the first time to make this Christmas tree craft. Now they are confident enough to share my sewing machine.
Sewing benefits for kids
Sewing is a beneficial activity for kids that will not only help them in many ways but will also teach a long-life skill.
It improves the kid’s hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills. Sewing also teaches patience and help little ones learn how to concentrate for longer periods of time.
Teach kids how to sew and you offer new ways for them to express their creativity. You can start at an early age and have toddlers thread beads on a string, continue with needle sewing when they are older and move on to a sewing machine.

How to make a paper plate gnome craft
Find the printable instructions at the end of the post.
Start by painting the paper plate any color of your choice. Set it aside and let it dry completely.
TIP: You can start with a colored paper plate and skip the painting step.
Download the gnome craft template (find it at the end of the article) and cut out the patterns. Trace the beard in the middle of the paper plate.
Cut out the beard shape.
Punch holes along the top and bottom of the beard.
Cut a big strand of yarn, thread it through the plastic yarn needle and tie one end to the needle. Secure the other end of the yarn at the back of the paper plate with tape.
You can now start threading the white yarn through the holes in the paper plate. Continue until you reach the end of your yarn.
If you haven’t threaded through all the holes, you can cut another strand of yarn and follow the same steps as before. (Tie one end to the needle and secure the other hand to the paper plate).
Trace the hat and pom pom patterns on colored or pattern paper and cut them out. Glue the pom pom at the top of the hat.
Glue the hat onto the paper plate, above the beard.
Trace the nose pattern on white or brown paper and cut it out. Glue the nose at the bottom of the hat.
