This paper plate Grinch craft doesn’t focus on Grinch’s adorable face but on his big heart.

The Grinch is a fun character to turn into a craft. He’s green and funny looking with his big mischievous smile and yellow eyes.

We have created a paper Grinch a while back and today we’re using a different craft material: a paper plate. We’re going to make a paper plate Grinch’s heart craft.

Our Grinch is a combination between yarn crafts and paper plate crafts. We sure like how these two go together. You will find a yarn and paper plate gnome and a Christmas tree in our collection of Christmas crafts.

Paper plate Grinch's heart craft for kids

The paper plate Grinch’s heart craft is a great opportunity for preschoolers and kindergartners to practice their fine motor skills. What makes this sewing project easier for kids is the use of a plastic yarn needle. This way they will find it more fun and will probably ask for more yarn crafts.

You can pair this craft with fun facts about heart. Like the blue whale has the largest heart in the world. Or if you want to focus only on humans:

  • The heart is about the size of your fist
  • Newborn babies have the fastest heart beats
  • Women’s hearts beat a bit faster than men’s hearts
  • Laughing is good for your heart

These facts may spark curiosity in kids and if they are asking to learn even more cool facts about the heart, be prepared to answer their questions.

Supplies:

Find the printable instructions at the end of the post.

Green paper plates

Let’s start by painting the paper plate green. Kids can use a paint brush, sponge paint brush or even their fingers (this is really fun for young kids).

TIP: You can start with a green paper plate and skip the painting step.

Heart on paper plate

Once the paint has dried completely, turn the paper plate face down and draw the heart shape onto the back of the paper plate. Cut the heart out.

Paper plate hearts

Use a hole punch to make holes along the heart.

Heart and yarn

Cut a big strand of yarn, thread it through the plastic yarn needle and tie one end to the needle. Secure the other end of the yarn to the back of the paper plate with tape.

You can now start threading the red yarn through the holes in the paper plate. Continue until you reach the end of your yarn.

If you haven’t threaded through all the holes, you can cut another strand of yarn and do the same as with the first. (Tie one end to the needle and secure the other hand to the paper plate).

Yarn hearts

This is how the back of the paper plates will look like.
